How to Automate Your Business Bill Payments Using BBPS API

April 28, 2025·10 min read·Byteware Labs

Manual bill payment is one of the most overlooked sources of operational inefficiency in Indian businesses. Finance teams spend hours each month logging in to different portals, entering account numbers, and waiting for confirmations. With our BBPS API, all of that can be automated.

What Can You Automate?

Our platform supports automated payments for the following bill categories:

  • Electricity bills — auto-pay when a due date approaches or bill is fetched
  • FASTag — auto-recharge when balance drops below a set threshold (e.g., ₹500)
  • LPG/Gas — schedule cylinder bookings every X days
  • Mobile and broadband — auto-recharge prepaid plans before expiry
  • Insurance premiums — pay automatically before the due date

Setting Up Auto-Pay Rules

You can configure auto-pay rules from your dashboard in three steps:

  • 1. Select a biller and add your account or consumer number
  • 2. Define a trigger: due date proximity, low balance threshold, or scheduled interval
  • 3. Set a payment limit and optionally require admin approval for amounts above a threshold

Using the BBPS API for Enterprise Automation

For developers integrating our API into ERP systems or internal tools, our REST API provides endpoints to programmatically manage the entire bill payment lifecycle:

  • Fetch bill details by consumer number or account ID
  • Initiate a payment and receive a transaction reference immediately
  • Check payment status with real-time webhook callbacks
  • Retrieve full transaction history with date, category, and status filters
  • Manage biller configurations per business unit or cost center

Approval Workflows for Large Payments

Not every automated payment should go through without human review. Our platform lets you set payment thresholds — for example, any payment above ₹10,000 requires approval from an admin or finance manager. This gives you automation efficiency while maintaining financial governance.

Getting Started with API Access

API access is available on our Business and Enterprise plans. Log in to your dashboard, navigate to Developer Settings, generate your API key, and whitelist your server IP. Our full API documentation covers authentication, request formats, error handling, and webhook integration.
